It’s the most wonderful time…except when it’s not!

The old song has been ringing around in my head for 2 weeks now.  You know, the song that goes like this:

It’s the most wonderful time of the year
With the kids jingle belling
And everyone telling you be of good cheer
It’s the most wonderful time of the year

It’s the hap-happiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings
When friends come to call
It’s the hap-happiest season of all

There’ll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting
And caroling out in the snow
There’ll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories of the
Christmases long, long ago

It’s the most wonderful time of the year
There’ll be much mistltoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When loved ones are near
It’s the most wonderful time of the year

But what if it’s not!  That has been the thought rolling around in my head. I know so many people for whom this season has some good things but also some very difficult things.  So, today I am starting a 2 part series about the Christmas season and things that are happening here at Oak Grove.  First, since this isn’t always the happiest time of the year for everyone in our fair city, we are deciding to do something about it.

Over the past several years Oak Grove has partnered with Hillcrest Transitional Housing by giving financial aid and volunteering with this amazing program here in Kansas City.  Hillcrest provides a hand up, not just a hand ou to those who are in need with housing and work.  They provide job training, financial training and home assistance through a 90 day program that results in people becoming self-sufficient.  This is huge.

This year we are going to partnering with them again through a special giving challenge called Tithe On A Tithe.  This Sunday at Oak Grove, 10% of all the offering will be given to Hillcrest Transitional Housing to help them help others in a time of need.

Tithe on a tithe

So, whether or not it truly is “the most wonderful time of the year” for you and your family, it can be a time of helping others who don’t feel quite the same.  Would you partner with us?  Also, you can give directly to Hillcrest Transitional Housing on their website which is http://www.hillcresttransitionalhousing.org/

Now, tomorrow I will write about what else is happening this weekend at Oak Grove.  You won’t want to miss this if you’re in the area.  This will be our best Christmas yet!
